French zinc architectural element as a mirror frame, circa 1880

Sometimes referred to as a dormer, this zinc window frame is from France, circa 1880. First used during the 17th century, the dormers would typically be seen on upper levels of sloped roofs of French chateaux. The interior would contain a large glass pane, allowing light to penetrate dark rooms such as attics. The opening of this dormer has a recessed molding along the interior edge. This antique French zinc piece can still be used architecturally as a window surround, although a mirror has been installed in the interior opening, allowing the dormer to be used as a decorative mirror for a study, living room, bathroom or garden space.
