Old Town at Home, Historic Alexandria Today, and is the first such book in decades; the most recent was Alexandria Houses, from 1946 with a 1988 reprint, with black and white photographs.

Old Town at Home features 19 homes with varying decor and historical and architectural significance. They range from the home of George Washington’s physician who heard his last words, to its next-door neighbor filled with contemporary art, to a home that hosted the Marquis de Lafayette on his final American tour, to an artist's studio where an African American doctor served his patients during segregation, to a small home with arguably the most significant collection of early American furniture and Peale portraits outside of a major museum, to a glass and steel condo in the former Elks Club, and more.

The book is 9.25 by 11.5 inches, 200 pages long, hardcover with a dust jacket, with a Foreword by local architect Robert Bentley Adams.

Anne Metcalf has lived in Alexandria, Virginia for more than 30 years. During that period, she has owned and restored several historic homes in Old Town. A DC native and longtime federal lobbyist for many of the nation’s premier cultural and conservation organizations, she came up with the idea for this book during a drive through town in the fall of 2023. It is the first of several books she plans to write about homes in the DC region.

DC native Gordon Beall is a sought-after architectural photographer who has shot countless assignments for leading architects and designers and almost every major shelter magazine, including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Veranda, Southern Living, Traditional Home and many others. The numerous books to his credit include The Inn at Little Washington: A Magnificent Obsession by Rizzoli.
